Mud Balance

The mud balance consists of a base and graduated arm with a cup, lid,
knife edge, rider, built-in spirit level, counterweight, and carrying case.
The constant volume cup is affixed to one end of the graduate arm and
the counterweight on the opposite end. The float is immersed in the drilling
mud, and the counterweight is adjusted until the arm is balanced. The
density of the mud is then read directly from the scale on the arm, typically
in pounds per gallon or pounds per cubic foot.
